Machining method guide

CNC wood machining: turning, milling, carving or profiling?

CNC wood machining uses digital data to control material removal. Choose by geometry: milling for contours and holes, turning for rotational parts, carving for 3D surfaces and profiling for repeated linear sections.

Quick selection by part type

MethodBest suited toKey input
CNC Routing & MillingContours, grooves, drilling and joineryDimensioned drawing and material
Architectural Wood Turning & SpindlesFurniture legs, balusters and rotational columnsSide profile or measurable sample
3D CNC Relief Carving & Classical SculptingReliefs, ornaments and variable-depth surfacesModel/file, dimensions and depth
Mitered Moldings & Edge ShapingMouldings and repeated linear profiles1:1 section or intact sample

A part may require more than one method. A rotational table leg with asymmetric ornament may be turned first and receive secondary machining. The final method depends on the file, blank and approval sample.

Information required before quotation

  • Drawing or sample photos with dimensions, units and revision.
  • Timber or panel, blank dimensions and material responsibility.
  • Prototype quantity, expected batch and required date.
  • Delivery surface, mating features and controlled dimensions.
  • Delivery location, packaging and required documentation.

What the website alone cannot guarantee

Tolerance, price, schedule, stock, sample fees and warranty depend on the part, material and order scope. TTW must review actual data and record these terms in the quotation or agreement.

Recommended working process

  1. 01 · Send data and identify gaps.
  2. 02 · Workshop reviews method, material and risks.
  3. 03 · Agree quotation, sample and acceptance criteria.
  4. 04 · Machine, inspect, deliver and retain revision.

Questions to ask before selecting a workshop

What does the workshop need to confirm feasibility?

At minimum: measurable geometry or sample, material, blank, quantity and delivery condition. Complex parts may require file review or a sample.

Why not compare quotations by unit price alone?

Quotations may differ in material, sampling, finishing, inspection, packaging and delivery. Compare the same scope and revision.

REQUEST CNC MACHINING QUOTE
